How to Catch Striper on Lake Texoma-Guide John Blasingame

Adventure Texoma Outdoors is an Artifical Lure charter service!  We could never figure out how to catch threadfin shad, and throwing a cast net at 3 AM seemed very strenuous!  Live Bait is hard to catch and hard work!  The hardest part is how to keep shad alive one you catch them?  We find tieing on slab spoon lures or threading a sassy shad swimbait on a jig head is easier, and more fun for our customers!  We prefer to cast and reel, not sit and drop threadfin shad to 25 feet!

Neophyte Striper Anglers

We enjoy showing neophyte anglers they can cast a swimbait or rip a slab spoon off the bottom of Lake Texoma and catch Striper!  We are one of the few 100% Artifical Lure Lake Texoma Fishing Guides!  We catch Striper on Lake Texoma with lures, not bait!  See Lake Texoma Striper Fishing Lures for more information! John Blasingame Lake Texoma Striper Fishing Guide will put you and yours on big fish!  Book your trip today!

What is a Striped Bass?

We love to Striper Fish Lake Texoma, and glad our lake has a bunch to chase!  The Striped Bass is an excellent game fish and you will enjoy your Adventure Texoma Outdoors with Captain John Blasingame!  The striped bass, also called Atlantic striped bass, striper, linesider, rock, or rockfish, is an anadromous perciforme fish of the family Moronidae found primarily along the Atlantic coast of North America.

Why is Lake Texoma the Striper Capital of the World?

Great news for Striper Anglers, Lake Texoma Doubles Down!  Due to high salt content from the Red River, Striped Bass spawn in Lake Texoma.  Lake Texoma is also stocked by Texas and Oklahoma Wildlife!  The lake was stocked with striped bass in the late 1960s and has proven to be an excellent habitat for them. It is one of the seven U.S. inland lakes where the striped bass reproduce naturally, instead of being farmed and released into the waters.

Striper Food Source-Threadfin and Gizzard Shad

The striper fish feed on large schools of shad, and often reach sizes of 12 to 20 pounds, with a lake record of 35.12 pounds caught April 25, 1984. The town of Kingston celebrates the importance of striper fishing to the local area with the annual Kingston Striper Festival each September. John Blasingame Lake Texoma Striper Fishing Guide will put you and yours on big fish!  Book your trip today!

A Day on the Water with Lake Texoma Fishing Guide John Blasingame

This is our number one asked questions, “what is a typical fishing guide trip on Texoma?”  Our first answer is it depends on the season.  Here is a typical trip description during the summer (May-June).  All of our trips meet at Grandpappy Marina at 5:30 AM CST.  I will make sure everyone has a valid license and a Lake Texoma Fishing License.  Yes, you need two licenses to Striper Fish Texoma!  We will load up my 24-foot BlazerBay Boat and start the Striper Hunt!  What do some Lake Texoma Fishing Guides and NASCAR have in common?  Some Texoma Fishing Guides speed race out to a school of small “Box Fish”, catch a limit, then speed race back to the marina for a one or two-hour trip!  The Adventure Texoma Outdoors Experience is NOT a Texoma NASCAR Striper Trip!  Come experience the difference with us today!

Hunting Striped Bass on Lake Texoma

Yes anglers, striper fishing Texoma is more like hunting than fishing!  Striped Bass will move long distances in a short time span.  You can have a nice group of Striper Fish by Sand Bass Pass on Monday, and you hit the same spot Tuesday to find the fish have moved to Preston Point!

How to Cast Striper Lures

Our trips will start with a quick how to cast striper lures in the middle of the lake.  We like to make sure our customers are comfortable casting lures before we get into the Striped Bass action.  Once everyone is comfortable casting striper lures, we will start to locate fish.  Locating fish could take 20 minutes, or 2 minutes?  If I had the answer to finding Striped Bass in two minutes, I would sit at home and make a lot of money!  John Blasingame Lake Texoma Striper Fishing Guide will put you and yours on big fish!  Book your trip today!

Catching Striped Bass on Lake Texoma

You will know when we find the Striper!  You will start to cast your striper lure and catching big fish, we hope!  Lake Texoma Striped Bass run in schools and once we locate a good school, catching is fast and furious!  May and June will be Slab Spoon fishing and some swimbaits.  Striped Bass will run threadfin shad onto humps, or push them in the wind current.  Once the shad move, so do the striper, and so do we!  We could move 20-30 times in one 5 hour trip!  Sit back have a water and enjoy the ride!  It won’t take long to find another school of striped bass!

Back to the Marina

Once we reach a limit of Striper or customers have had enough for one day, we will go back to my slip at Grandpappy Marina and I will clean, fillet, and bag your catch!  Cleaning a limit of 4 anglers can take a while, so we offer some great dock fishing if you like.  Lake Texoma is a great fishery and has the following species that can be caught from my dock!  Be careful, while I’m cleaning Striped Bass, Big Blue Catfish will move in to eat the caucuses.

Lake Texoma Predominant Fish Species
  • Blue & channel catfish
  • White & striped bass
  • Largemouth bass
  • Spotted bass
  • Smallmouth bass
  • Black & white crappie
  • Bluegill

Striper Fishing Lake Texoma

We love to post our Striper Fish Pictures from Lake Texoma on our website and social media!  We target Striped Bass year-round on Lake Texoma and hang some big fish!  Come join us and get your picture with a big Striped Bass!  Many anglers love fishing for striped bass.  For me, the hopes of hooking a huge striper have been an obsession for me since the ’70s.  Over the years I’ve been fortunate to catch many big striped bass.  Striper Fish Pictures followed by a safe release, create a better Lake Texoma fishery!

Photo and Release

However, with each striper caught came an insatiable quest to catch another one. I release much bigger striper than I catch, that is the reality of recent regulations, and how I feel about the fish in my heart.  However, the plain truth is, not all of these big fish survive the/my release. Therein lies the problem within the sportfishing community… we love striped bass so much, that we’re loving them to death.  Remember to Catch, Photo, and release!  Keep the white bass for the hot grease!

Striper Fishing Lake Texoma, Catch, Photo, and Release

We are one of the few full time lure only striper guides on Lake Texoma.  We love to catch BIG Striper, but we also understand big fish make big baby fish!  We try to manage our fishery like we do our deer lease in West Texas.  Selective Harvesting of Striper on Lake Texoma is a must!  There is no reason to keep a Striper over 10 lbs!  We encourage anglers and our clients to Catch, Photo, and release all Striper over 10 lbs!  If you want to eat fish, Kill Whitey!  White Bass are made for hot grease!  Come fish with the Best Lake Texoma Fishing Guide, John Blasingame today!

Catch and Release Fishing Lake Texoma

Catch and release is a practice within recreational fishing intended as a technique of conservation. After capture, the fish are unhooked and returned to the water. Often, a fast measurement and weighing of the fish is worthwhile.  Not every fish is a “keeper.” You may catch a fish that’s under legal size or too big to fit in your cooler. You may land a magnificent trophy and decide to return it to the water so that you — or some other lucky angler — will have a chance to catch that fish again. Whatever your reasons for choosing live release, you want to give your fish the best possible chance of survival.

Catch and Release Tips

  • Set the hook quickly to reduce the likelihood that fish will swallow the bait.
  • Play and land fish as quickly as possible. Playing fish to exhaustion can harm the fish.
  • When fishing in deep water, bring fish in slowly to help it adjust to changing pressure.
  • Consider using barbless hooks.
  • Keep your release tools close by.
  • Minimize the time fish is out of the water (no longer than you can hold your breath.)
  • Leave fish in the water if you can and use a tool to remove the hook.
  • If possible, keep the fish from thrashing without using a net. If a net is required, use a rubber-mesh landing net instead of abrasive nylon.
  • Avoid removing the slime/mucous layer, which protects fish from parasites and infections.
  • Try to keep fish off the ground or floor of a boat.
  • Use a wet rag or glove, or wet hands before handling fish.
  • Turn fish on its back and cover its eyes to calm it.
  • Don’t put your fingers in the eyes or gills.
Hook Removal and Letting Striped Bass Go
  • Use needle-nose pliers, hemostats, or a hook remover to remove the hook and protect your hands.
  • Back the hook out the opposite way it went in.
  •  Watch this video to learn how to remove a hook embedded deep within the fish.
  • For a larger fish in the water, slip a gaff around the leader and slide it to the hook. Lift the gaff upward while pulling downward on the leader.
  • Do not jerk or pop a leader to break it. This can injure vital organs in the fish.
  • Place fish in the water, gently supporting the mid-section and tail until it swims away.
  • Resuscitate an exhausted fish by moving it or facing it into the current, gently forcing water into the mouth and over the gills.
  • Watch the fish when released. If it doesn’t swim away, recover it and try again.
  • Striper Fish Pictures followed by a safe release, create a better Lake Texoma fishery!
